Walking in and around Moffat

Moffat, Scotland's first 'Walkers are Welcome' town and the surrounding Moffat hills present a haven for walkers of all abilities. The clean Scottish air, stunning scenery and timeless beauty are truly awe inspiring. Whether for a day's hiking or a short stroll in unspoilt countryside, Moffat is the perfect place to experience a truly memorable walking holiday.

There is a comprehensive range of walks signed around the town itself and many more in the rolling hills around Moffat - including two nearby Corbetts. The area is on the scenic Southern Upland Way and is the most northerly point on The Annandale Way - the long distance walk from the Devil's Beef Tub to the Solway Firth at Annan which opened in 2009. If you're in town for a while, why not join in one of the Better4Walking walks on a Wednesday morning?

Moffat, along with other 'Walkers are Welcome' towns was featured in an article in The Great Outdoors magazine in November 2011.

Comfortable walker-friendly accommodation, ranging from camping sites to top class hotels, is available to suit all budgets. Moffat boasts a wide range of great places to eat with lots of award-winning cuisine. The Southern Upland Way

St Mary's Loch on the Southern Upland Way

The Southern Upland Way is Britain's first official coast to coast long distance foot-path. It runs 212 miles (340 km) from Portpatrick on the south-west coast of Scotland to Cockburnspath on the eastern seaboard. It offers superb and varied walking country, still undiscovered by many enthusiasts.

The Way provides a real challenge for the experienced walker, yet some of the shorter stretches are suitable for families and the less ambitious. Travelling the entire 212 mile length of the Southern Upland Way will take you through an enormous variety of scenery and may provide a challenge that will give you a tremendous sense of achievement on completion.

Full details of the route can be found on the Southern Upland way website.

The Annandale Way

Annandale Way signposts

The Annandale Way is a 55 mile long-distance walking route linking Moffat and Annan that can be walked either north to south or south to north. It was developed by Sulwath Connections and local communities with the support of local estates and farmers to help promote Annandale's attractions as a walking area.

It starts high above the source of the river Annan with a circumnavigation of the Devils Beef Tub before dropping down its eastern side and following the river Annan along the valley bottom into the picturesque market town of Moffat.

Copies of the official Annandale Way guide can be bought at various retail outlets in the town. Or send a cheque for 2.50 payable to Moffat and District Community Initiative to:
