Classic Car Rally

The biggest classic car event in Scotland with an exhibition of classic and vintage cars at Moffat Showground . See them set off on their rally on the Saturday from 12 noon at 15-minute intervals in groups of 60 cars . Sunday is the main day to view the cars in the showground, which is open 10 .30am–4pm, with the prize-giving at 3pm . Adopted Charities for 2017 are Macmillan Cancer Support and other cancer charities .

South of Scotland Tennis Championships

One of the oldest tennis tournaments in Scotland which dates back to the 1880s, there are 28 events scheduled over 7 days from Sunday 30 July to Saturday 5 August . The Championship expects 100 plus players descending on Moffat from under 8s to over 45 events, with gents, ladies, mixed and junior boys and girls events . Players travel from all over Britain to play in the Championships with junior finals happening on most days and the senior finals scheduled for Saturday 5 August . The Beechgrove Pavilion Café will be open each day.

41st World Gold Panning Championships

Come along to watch – or join in – the 41st World Gold Panning Championships, an international event which attracts competitors from over 20 countries to pan native sand and gravel in a specially made panning pool to find gold for the chance to become a World Champion . In addition to gold panning, there will be children’s entertainers during the week, a refreshments marquee with a bar, and a full programme of evening entertainment, including a ceilidh . Meals will be available on site and there will be a range of interesting stalls to browse .

Moffat Russian Conference 2017: ‘The Russian Phoenix – art and literature in the era of the 1905 and 1917 revolutions’

Moffat Russian Conferences is delighted to announce the 6th Moffat Russian Conference, a major international gathering, held annually in the town . This year’s theme examines the response in literature and the visual arts to the Russian Revolutions of 1905 and 1917 . Two contemporary novelists from Russia will discuss their re-imaginings of the period: ‘what if...’; there will be sessions by British and Russian specialists on Mayakovsky, including his work in the visual arts, theatre and film, as well as his poetry; the novels of Bulgakov, in particular ‘The White Guard’, and Blok’s ‘The Twelve’ . Speakers from Scotland will discuss the response of such poets as Hugh MacDiarmid to the momentous Russian events . Full simultaneous translation is provided and all are welcome .

Start your Christmas shopping in Moffat . The High Street is transformed into a thriving Street Market complete with Children’s Rides . There are also two bustling indoor Craft Fairs with quality Christmas themed products and live entertainment . Santa arrives around 1 .15pm, is in his Grotto in the Town Hall from 2pm and returns to the town centre to switch on the famous Moffat Christmas Lights at 4 .30pm .
